The Greek Paracelsus called Melissa (Lemon Balm) "the elixir of life", the ancient people used to bathe in its infusion, added it to wine for aroma, and rubbed it in places stung by bees and wasps. In Spain, it was used in magic practices. Special elixirs produced with it were supposed to give courage to the cowardly ones and turn enemies into allies. In the eighteen century, "Carmelite Water" became a famous drink – a root vodka made from Melissa, produced in secrecy by Parisian Carmelites, which even had the power to remove bad spells.
